Heading home for summer? Here’s what you need to know before you move out.
As the end of term approaches, it’s time to start thinking about moving out of your accommodation. To help make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible, here are a few important reminders:
♻️ Waste & recycling
Please ensure your room and kitchen are cleared out before you leave. Use the appropriate bins for general waste, recycling, and food waste. See Swansea Council guidance here.
Unwanted but usable items? Consider donating them to the British Heart Foundation or the Swansea Environment Centre by using the donation points located nearby or by collection.
- Living on campus? Keep an eye out for extra recycling bins and donation banks located across halls sites. More info here.
- Living off campus? Check your collection days and local recycling guidance on the Swansea Council website.
📺 TV licence refund
If you’ve purchased a TV licence but are heading home for the summer, you may be entitled to a partial refund.
Apply online via the TV Licensing refund portal – the process is quick and easy. Make sure to have your TV licence details and supporting evidence to show it is no longer required. Read more here.

🧼 Clean & check
Before handing back your keys, please ensure your room is clean and all personal belongings have been removed. Don’t forget to:
- Take all rubbish and food waste out.
- Check wardrobes, drawers, and under the bed.
- Leave the room tidy for the next person.
🔑 Returning your keys
- On-campus? Return your keys to your residence reception by your contract end date.
- Off-campus? Speak with your landlord or letting agent to confirm the check-out process, including final meter readings.
📦 Leaving items behind?
If you have bulky or unwanted items you can’t take with you, explore Campus Life’s guidance on reuse and recycling, or reach out to your accommodation team for help and advice.
📩 You’ve got mail…
If you have mail delivered to your residence address, you will need to contact your bank, credit card provider and other relevant parties such as Doctor/GP and Dentist and notify them of your replacement address.
Living off campus? You may have to contact energy providers (gas/electric), internet, home insurance and others to notify them of your replacement address. There are plenty of standard template letters on the web to assist you.
