Course: BSc Occupational Therapy (Full-time)

Graduated: Summer 2025

At Swansea University, we take immense pride in celebrating the achievements of our students. Recognising success is more than just acknowledging hard work, it’s about inspiring others, building confidence, and showcasing the incredible impact our students have both during their studies and beyond. Whether it’s academic excellence, professional growth, or personal resilience, these stories reflect the heart of our university community and the values we share.

Below we profiled Ashleigh Mathias who recently won the prestigious Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board’s “Most Inspiring Student 2025”

About the Award

The “Most Inspiring Student” award is a prestigious recognition given by Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board to a student who has demonstrated exceptional commitment, resilience, and impact during their placement. It celebrates not only clinical excellence but also the ability to uplift and inspire others, a true reflection of the NHS values.

What made Ashleigh stand out?

During her Occupational Therapy placement, Ashleigh Mathias exemplified the values of resilience, professionalism, and leadership that Swansea University strives to instil in its students. Working on a busy acute site during a period of heightened pressure, including business continuity challenges and the partial closure of a sister site, Ashleigh not only managed a defined caseload but did so with determination and adaptability.

Her ability to collaborate confidently with the multidisciplinary team (MDT) was particularly impressive. Ashleigh regularly contributed to board rounds, presenting complex cases with clarity and professionalism to consultants, senior nursing staff, and physiotherapy colleagues. Her maturity and communication skills made her a standout contributor, even among seasoned professionals.

Ashleigh’s impact went beyond her student role. She inspired the entire Occupational Therapy team, revitalising a group with over 60 years of combined experience. Her positive influence left a lasting legacy on the service.

Where is Ashleigh now?

Ashleigh has now graduated and is working as a Rotational Occupational Therapist at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, continuing to make a difference in patient care across South Wales.
