Dear Students,
You are invited to take part in a Welsh language speech study at Swansea University, led by ML Researcher Arvin Singh (Faculty of Science & Engineering) under the supervision of Dr Gary K.L. Tam.
This project has been approved by the Science & Engineering Ethics Committee (Approval No: 2 2025 14719 14540).
We are developing machine learning technology that can assess Welsh speaking proficiency from complete beginners (Pre-A1 CEFR level) to advanced speakers. Your participation will help improve language-learning tools, assessment systems, and Welsh language technology.
What you’ll do
A 1-hour session (on Bay Campus or online) where you’ll read short Welsh sentences aloud while being recorded.
No prior Welsh knowledge is needed, in fact, we specifically need complete beginners.
What you’ll receive
A £10 Amazon voucher after completing the session.
Who can participate?
- Swansea University students aged 18+
- No Welsh language experience
- Comfortable with voice recording
