Discovery Student Volunteering Swansea is thrilled to announce its recent accolade: the Cynnig Cymraeg recognition. Awarded by the Welsh Language Commissioner, the Cynnig Cymraeg is a testament to Discovery’s dedication to providing Welsh language services through volunteering. This recognition not only signifies Discovery’s commitment but also assures the public of the availability of Welsh language services.

Over the past year, Discovery has demonstrated its commitment to promoting Welsh language and culture through various initiatives. These include delivering 10 one-off Welsh volunteering opportunities, organising 14 hours of Clwb Cymraeg, and registering over 100 Welsh speakers and learners on its volunteering platform. Notably, approximately 9% of Discovery’s active volunteer base identifies as Welsh speakers or learners, while an impressive 80% of its staff members are engaged in learning Welsh.

Looking ahead, Discovery remains steadfast in its mission to enhance Welsh language provision. Key objectives include ensuring the continuous availability of Welsh language projects on its volunteering platform, organising monthly one-off volunteering opportunities in Welsh, collaborating with academic institutions to engage Welsh-speaking students, and providing bilingual communications across all channels.

Eleanor Norton, Director of Discovery, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to fostering Welsh language proficiency among its stakeholders. “Discovery aims to improve its access and uptake of the Welsh language, enabling staff, volunteers, supporters, and users to interact comfortably in either language. We recognize the significance of the Welsh language as a vital component of our country’s heritage and identity,” Norton stated. Reflecting on her experience, Priya, a volunteer with Discovery, shared, “Through volunteering, I’ve gained confidence in speaking Welsh and feel a stronger sense of belonging to the community. Welsh belongs to everyone who desires to learn and speak it, and I’m proud to be a part of that.”
