Our Swansea University Tree Society is blazing a trail towards a greener future with the launch of its Graduation Tree Planting initiative, inspired by the groundbreaking legislation passed by the Philippine government in 2019.

Taking a leaf out of the Philippine government’s book, where students are required by law to plant 10 trees before graduating, society President Jean-Louis Button proposed a similar program to our University Senior Leadership Team. The idea quickly took root, and the pilot program has recently concluded its inaugural phase.

Under this initiative, each 2024 graduate from the School of Biosciences, Geography and Physics  will receive a tree planted in their name. Accompanied by a certificate pinpointing the GPS location of their tree, students leave behind a tangible legacy of their time at Swansea University. With more than 300 trees planted to brighten up a woodland in Townhill, the initiative has already made a significant impact.

But the initiative doesn’t end with planting trees. The Tree Society is committed to providing ongoing care for the newly planted saplings, ensuring their growth and longevity. Any trees that do not survive will be replaced, ensuring the sustainability of the pilot for years to come.

The Tree Society have been supported by several organisations in order to make this initiative a success, Jean-Louis Button explained:

“The Swansea University Community Grant assisted us in acquiring trees and equipment in order to bring the project to life, and we’ve received a lot of support from Swansea University Students’ Union and the cosmetic organisation LUSH.”

“Without this support and generous donations, we really wouldn’t have been able to do what we have achieved, as we don’t charge our members a penny to be part of the club!”

Looking ahead, the Tree Society aims to expand the program to encompass all future graduates, spreading the message of environmental responsibility and sustainability throughout the university community. Not only does this initiative add a unique and meaningful dimension to graduation celebrations, but it also contributes to the greater good of our planet and the wellbeing of future generations.
