Swansea University invites you to a new exhibition, Reclaiming Narratives, in line with the theme for Celebrating Black History this year. An inspiring and immersive journey into identity, heritage, and culture, presented in celebration of Black History at the Library Foyer on Singleton Campus. This exhibition features stories and experiences of our academic community, highlighting contributions from both students and staff.
The exhibition was launched with an insightful panel discussion featuring Councillor Patience Bentu, Dr. Emmanuel Siaw, Sheila Agyei-Afari, Tumi Ajulo, and Dr. Vivian Osuchukwu, each of whom shared personal reflections on their journeys within Higher Education and the local community.
Curated by students and supported by Theresa Ogbekhiulu from the Swansea Academy of Inclusivity, Dr. Dawn Bolger, EDI Lead from the School of Social Sciences, and Emily Hewitt from the Richard Burton Archives, Reclaiming Narratives showcases an engaging collection of artwork, cultural artifacts, and photographs creates a space for both reflection and dialogue on themes central to heritage, identity, and belonging.
Aligned with the Race Equality Charter’s goals to promote inclusivity and address racial inequalities and underrepresentation. Visitors can explore historical and contemporary narratives, including the inspiring story of Swansea’s first Black Student Union president and archival materials documenting Black student contributions and stories over the years, and the Windrush materials contributed by Race Council Cymru.
With over 30 captivating works, from paintings and mosaics to textiles, biographies, and digital photography, each piece invites reflection and encourages open-minded exploration. The exhibition will run at the Singleton Campus Library until January 30th, 2025, and continue at the Y Twyni Bay Campus from February 4th to April 30th, 2025. We thank all our artists who contributed their work, including Antoinette Sylva, Ebube Okoli, Nyaradzo Chabata, Marco Verow, and Dunni Olisa.
