Following on from our previous communication regarding transport improvements, we would like to update you on further interventions to improve bus services to and from campus.

Thank you for all your feedback regarding the bus services. University staff, including our Sustainable Travel Officer have been working closely with local providers, the Students’ Union and Student Reps to understand current bus travel issues. We have gathered feedback from a range of sources including student voice platform Unitu, emails, Bus Travel User Groups and via our new ‘Tell Us About Travel’ online form.

From your feedback we understand the key issues to be:

  • The 91 service – Reduced capacity and frequency of the 91 service, with no direct service after 7pm and removal of the nighttime service.
  • The Park & Ride Service – The lack of capacity and frequency of the Park & Ride service.
  • Lack of services connecting the Crown Court and St Helen’s Road to the Bay Campus.
  • No late-night direct Campus to Campus bus service linking Bay Campus to Singleton Campus to enable students to engage with society events, sports and social activities.

We have been working closely with local operators, including First Cymru to address the above issues and are pleased to confirm:

  • The Park and Ride shuttle service is now in place and running well, thank you to everyone who has used this so far. You can access the timetable which will run up until 7th June 2024 here.
  • From 4th – 22nd March, the 91 service will run every 30 minutes, The timetable is available here. This is an interim measure therefore details will not appear on the First Cymru website or app.
  • During the Easter vacation period (from 22nd March to the start of the Spring Term), the 90, 91 and 92 services will continue to run. These will be hourly services during the vacation period. You will find timetables online here.

As previously communicated, these are temporary measures put in place to address issues in the short term, and we are very pleased to let you know that we have been able to negotiate longer term improvements to services with First Cymru. These will be introduced from April 2024:

  • The 91 service will continue to run every 30 minutes, with additional buses during peak times targeted at the 9am lecture start.
  • A new N91 late night service will follow the same route as the daytime service, running from 7pm every 90 minutes up until 3.44am, also calling at True and Roost student accommodation.
  • The 90a service will now stop at St Helen’s Road and The Crown Court during peak times.
  • A new N92 late night service will run every 30 minutes from 7pm until 3.54am, connecting Singleton and Bay Campus via St Helen’s Road, the Bus Station and Sainsburys.

The Fabian Way Park & Ride free shuttle service will continue to run during term time until the 7th of June, alongside the 90a service that will continue to run as normal.

We do hope these developments will improve your commuting experience and help you travel more easily campus to campus, and around the city.

We will continue to monitor all feedback and use it to advocate for improved services on your behalf. Please do continue to report travel issues via our ‘Tell Us About Travel’ online form. You can also have your say at the Bus User Group, which is attended by staff, students, the Students’ Union President, and Full Time Officers, as well as representatives from the Local Authorities and other partner organisations. The next group will take place on 11th April. Details can be found here.

Thank you again for your patience and understanding.
